ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -Lefty starter John Hesketh scattered two runs on five hits over seven innings of work as the University of New Mexico baseball team (18-10) swept the Vermont Catamounts (5-8) with an 8-3 win Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park.
The Lobos started the scoring early with back-to-back RBI singles by Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Kevin Atkinson in the first inning. The pair would come around to score with a single to left center courtesy of Mark Rockey, giving the Lobos a 4-0 advantage.
After surrendering a run in the third and the sixth, the Lobos added three more of their own in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, second baseman Mike Brownstein, who singled in the second to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, walked. Center fielder Adam Courcha shot a double down the left field line to put runners on first and second for senior Matt Hibbitts. Hibbitts singled to score Brownstein and advance Courcha to third. Courcha and Hibbitts would cross home one batter later with a Rafael Neda double, putting the Lobos up 8-2.
Hesketh (2-1) fanned six before giving way to righty Brandon Hewett in the eighth. Hewett allowed a sac fly RBI and struck out one in his inning of work. Daniel Grubbs entered in the ninth getting three Catamount batters to strike out to close out the game.
Neda finished with three hits and Atkinson had two hits, while Cavazos-Galvez and Courcha contributed two runs.
The Lobos continue regular season play next weekend with a key series at San Diego State starting Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, April 1, the Lobos will duel the Albuquerque Isotopes in a seven-inning exhibition game set for 6 p.m. at Isotopes Park.
