Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of New Mexico women's tennis team took two doubles wins Wednesday in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tennis championships in Las Vegas, Nev. against Colorado State. With the wins the Lobos took the lead 1-0 heading into singles play. Unfortunately, New Mexico's season came to an end as they fell, 5-2 to the Rams.
Freshmen Amy Shipperd and Laura Richardson dominated Melissa Holzinger and Veronika Wojakowska in doubles play. The Lobo duo only allowed one game to get away from them as they won, 8-1 and were the first off the court.
Fellow freshman Kristin Eggleston and sophomore Manumea Durie finished right behind Shipperd and Richardson, handing Lauren Mulhern and Tori Arneson an 8-2 defeat to capture the doubles point for only the second time this season. The first time came against UT Arlington on Jan. 23, 2010 in Lubbock, Texas.
Junior Anya Villanueva was the lone singles victory getting her win in two sets over Laura Neal. Villanueva took the first set 6-4 and dominated the second set, 6-1. The Mexico City, Mexico product is 5-2 when she wins the first set.
The Lobos finish the season 1-21, 0-8. New Mexico had at least three freshmen in every lineup this season.
