ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The Silver squad battled the Cherry squad to a 1-1 tie and advanced 5-4 on penalties kicks this afternoon in the women's soccer Cherry-Silver intrasquad at the UNM Soccer Complex. Senior Veronika Strnadova netted the winning penalty kick to help edge the Cherry team. Head coach Kit Vela was pleased with the Lobos' last warm-up before the regular season starts on Aug. 21.
"This was a great dress rehearsal for us," said Vela. "We had two very good teams out there and now we just have to work out the details. Everyone played and once the players got the jitters out in the first half they found their rhythm and we had a strong second half."
After 110 minutes of regulation play and two overtimes, the Lobos headed to penalty kicks where the Silver squad edged the Cherry team 5-4. Strnadova put one past freshman keeper Kelli Cornell while the Cherry failed to equalize on their final attempt.
Both squads played tough defense in the first half and only allowed six total shots. The score was knotted at zero at the end of the first half.
The offenses for both the Cherry and Silver squads found their strides in the second half. Both squads fired off 10 shots a piece in the second half with both teams finding the back of the net. The Silver squad started the attack when freshman Shelbie Luna put a ball up and over the defense and found a wide open Jordan Craig who sent a right footed strike past Cornell for the matches first goal. After coming close on several runs but not finding pay dirt sophomore Nicole Reed collected a cross from junior Katie McKernan and blasted the ball in to the back of the net.
The Lobos will open regular season play on Friday, Aug. 21 when they take on Idaho State at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
