SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The New Mexico Lobo baseball team fought hard in the final game of a four-game set against UTSA, but unfortunately came up short, losing the game to the Roadrunners, 8-4, as well as the series, three games to one.

The Lobos fell behind early to the Roadrunners and fought to come back, but just didn't have enough left to catch UTSA in the end. The early defecit proved to be too much to overcome.

Head coach Ray Birmingham was anything but thrilled with his teams performance over the weekend.

"I am not happy with any part of our game," Birmingham said. "I saw some good individual performances but this is a team game. There is a good team here, but some guys better step up."

The first inning was a little rough for the Lobos, as they gave up four runs to the Roadrunners. UNM starter Selby Brummett gave up the first run on an RBI single by Daniel Rockett, but the bulk of the damage came by way of a three-run bomb served up by Brummett to UTSA's Ryan Dalton that give the Roadrunners the early 4-0 lead.

UNM struck back in the second as Josh Melendez, the hottest hitter on the team to start the 2012 season, pummeled the first homerun of his Lobo career to left field off UTSA's starter Michael Kraft, cutting the Roadrunners' lead to 4-1.

Except for a run scored by the Roadrunners in the bottom of the third, the game fell relatively quiet until the Lobos struck, once again, in the fifth inning. Kyle Stiner collected an RBI by driving in Chris Nunez with a single to right center. Ben Woodchick then stole home on the next at bat off a failed pickoff attempt to nab Stiner at first, bringing the score to 5-3 in UTSA's favor.

UTSA answered with a run of its own in the fifth to extend its lead to 6-3. The Lobos continued to chip away at the Roadrunners lead by adding a run in the sixth when Erik Suarez knocked an RBI single through the left side to score Melendez.

With the score now at 6-4 in the Roadrunners' favor after six innings, UNM had three innings left to grab the lead. The Lobos came up scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings and then found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the eighth as the Roadrunners had the bases loaded with just one out. UTSA knocked in two more runs before the Lobos could get out of the inning, extending its lead to 8-4.

UNM couldn't complete the comeback, as it went down in order in the ninth, dropping the game by a final score of 8-4.

After the loss, the Lobos record falls to 2-5 on the season. UNM will next face No. 15 Oklahoma at home in Isotopes Park for a three-game series March 2-4.
