COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll announced by the Mountain West Conference today. For the second straight season the Lobos have been picked to finish sixth in the conference poll.
"Preseason polls are just that, a preseason poll," said Vela. "It's up to the teams to either sway in that direction or to rise above it. I would venture a guess that our team will rise above it."
Reigning MWC champ BYU was picked to finish first followed by a tie for second place between TCU and Utah. San Diego State was picked to finish fourth with UNLV rounding out the top five. New Mexico takes the sixth spot, while Wyoming and Air Force take the seventh and eighth spots respectively.
New Mexico was picked to finish sixth last season and ended up finishing the season in a tie for fourth place with UNLV. The MWC tournament takes the leagues top six team to the end of the year tournament and a chance to place in the NCAA Women's College Cup.
The Lobos quest to their first MWC Championship and NCAA berth begins on Aug. 21 when they host Idaho State at 7 p.m. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com
