Two former University of New Mexico men's golfers will be making the trip to the 2008 British Open this week at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Michael Letzig (2000-03) and Doug LaBelle II (1995-98) finished second and third, respectively, in the International Qualifying in Dearborn, Michigan, to earn a spot in The Open.
Letzig shot an 11-under 133 (67-66) in the 36-hole qualifier June 30-31 at the TPC Michigan to finish second in the event and earn a spot in the British Open for the first time in his career. Letzig will play the first two rounds with Phillip Walton and David Smail. His first round tee time is 11:52 a.m. local time (4:52 a.m. M.D.T.) on Thursday, July 17. The 2003 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year will be in the second group off the tee on Friday at 6:41 a.m. local time (11:41 p.m. M.D.T.). Letzig is in his first full year on the PGA Tour, making 10 cuts in 19 events. He has three top-10s and five top-25 finishes, ranking 87th in the FedExCup points standings.
LaBelle shot a 10-under 134 (68-66) at the TPC Michigan qualifier to punch his ticket for the 2008 Open with a third place finish. He will also be making his first appearance in The Open. LaBelle, a two-time All-American at UNM, has made five cuts in 13 events on the PGA Tour this season. He is currently 164th in the FedExCup points standings. LaBelle tees off at 3:59 p.m. local time (8:59 a.m. M.D.T.) with Chih Bing Lam and Jose Filipe Lima in Thursday's opening round. His second round tee time is set for 10:48 a.m. local time (3:48 a.m. M.D.T.) on Friday.
