New Mexico Goes 3-1 At Arizona Fall Classic

TUCSON, Ariz.--The University of New Mexico softball team closed out the 2009 fall season with a 3-1 performance at the Arizona Fall Classic, Oct. 10-11. The Lobos defeated Cypress College 7-3 and fell to the host Arizona Wildcats 5-0 for their only loss at the Classic. The Wildcats made it to the College World Series last year, and are eight-time National Champions. New Mexico topped Central Arizona and Arizona Western 6-1 and 5-0, respectively, to close out the weekend.

The Lobos jumped ahead of Cypress 4-0 in the first inning and never looked back, scoring another run in the third inning and two in the sixth to set the final score at 7-3. Katie Gilmore led the Lobos offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Jessica Lujan-Dresslar was 1-for-2 with one RBI, while Shenise Cox was 1-for-3 with a home run. Kari Gutierrez pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits for the win in the Lobos' first game on Saturday.

Arizona pitcher Kenzie Fowler made things tough for the Lobo lineup in the second game, striking out ten for the Wildcats. Lujan-Dresslar picked up one hit for the Lobos in two at-bats. Freshman Kaela DeBroeck spent five innings in the circle for New Mexico, giving up seven hits and striking out three in the 5-0 loss.

On Sunday, the Lobos scored two runs in the third inning and four in the seventh for a 6-1 win over Central Arizona. Cassie Kalapsa was 2-for-4 at the plate and knocked in two runs for New Mexico. Gutierrez pitched another complete game for the Lobos, striking out six and allowing only three hits.

New Mexico shut out Arizona Western 5-0 in their final game at the Classic, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding two in the sixth. Cristin Anderson was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Lobos. DeBroeck picked up the win on the mound, striking out six and scattering three hits.

The Lobos concluded their 2009 Fall Ball schedule with the Classic and posted a 7-1 record overall this fall. In addition to this weekend's 3-1 performance, New Mexico had two wins over Odessa College and two wins over Luna Community College, all in home doubleheader action at Lobo Field.

New Mexico opens up the 2010 season Feb. 12-14 at the Texas State Tournament in San Marcos, where they will take on UT-Arlington, Texas State, Oklahoma State, and Northern Illinois over the course of the weekend. Please visit GoLobos.com for more information as the spring season approaches.
