LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- Junior Dane Hamilton had a great day for the Lobos on Tuesday at New Mexico State after fighting illness last week. Hamilton, starting in left field, scored eight of the Lobos 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Aggies, 12-3 and 8-6. With the doubleheader win, UNM picked up 1.5 points in the Route 66 Casino Hotel Rio Grande Rivalry to take a 12-6 lead in the 2007-08 standings.
Game One - UNM 12, NMSU 3
The Lobos took a 6-0 lead over three innings to get off to a good start in Game One. Mike Brownstein started the game with a double to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rafael Neda to put the Lobos on the board in the first, 1-0.
In the second inning, left fielder Dane Hamilton scored the first of his team-high four runs on a single by Scott Gracey. Gracey scored on a Bobby Moore single to up the Lobos' lead to 3-0. The Lobos doubled their lead in the third with three runs. Coty Wilson hit a single to score Kevin Atkinson, then scored along with Hamilton, again, on a Gracey single, 6-0.
In the top of the fifth, Hamilton scored for a third time on a single by Adam Courcha, 7-0. Moore added a run in the sixth, scoring on a passed ball, 8-0.
NMSU got two runs across in the bottom of the sixth, 8-2.
The Lobos added four runs in the seventh, three, including Hamilton's fourth of the game, on an error by the center fielder on a single by Brownstein. Brownstein scored on a double by Ian Hollick, 12-2.
Hamilton was three of five from the plate, while Gracey led the team with three RBI.
Lobo starter Stephen Smith threw three solid innings, giving up only one hit, one walk and struck out two. John Hesketh (1-0) picked up the win in two innings of relief work. Jake Wilson (1-2) took the loss for the Aggies.
Game Two - UNM 8, NMSU 6
Dane Hamilton picked up where he left off in Game One, scoring four more runs while hitting two of three with two walks. Hamilton led off the top of the second inning with a single, advanced to third on an error by the Aggie pitcher and scored on a grounder by Kevin Atkinson, 1-0.
Hamilton led off the fourth with his second single of the game and scored on an Aggie error, 3-0.
In the fifth, the Aggies walked Hamilton. Ian Hollick and Hamilton advanced on a passed ball to get in scoring position and capitalized on an error by NMSU to build the UNM lead to 5-0.
NMSU (6-9) fought back in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs to close the UNM lead to 5-3.
Hamilton scored for the fourth time in the game in the top of the seventh, scoring on a Coty Wilson sacrifice fly after being walked for a second time.
New Mexico (11-8, 1-2 MWC) continues action this weekend with a three-game MWC series at TCU, March 20-22.
