STANFORD, Calif. - The fourth-ranked New Mexico women's golf team stands in a tie for fifth place after firing a two-over 290 in the first round of the Stanford/Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate Friday afternoon (Oct. 17). Washington currently leads after shooting an eight-under 280. The nationally prestigious field features nine teams ranked in the Top 25, including six in the top 10.
Junior Shannon Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) paced the Lobos with a season-best first-round 70 (-2), good for a tie in seventh place. Senior Katrina Leckovic followed with a par-72 (tied for 22nd) and junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.) fired a one-over 73 (tied for 29th).
Pepperdine's Carolina Llano currently has a one-shot advantage for the lead with a five-under 67.
Freshman Ashley Rollins (Austin, Texas), who leads the Mountain West in stroke average, is in a tie for 46th after carding a three-over 75. Christine Fernandez (So., Henderson, Nev.) shot a 77 (+5) to stand in a tie for 67th.
The Lobos return to action for the second round of the Stanford/Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 18). The final round will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18.
