FORT WORTH, Texas --- Junior Bobby Moore hit a grand slam home run and starter Stephen Smith did his job on the mound for eight innings as the University of New Mexico beat TCU, 5-3, and win the MWC series, 2-1.
Left fielder Matt Hibbitts extended his current hitting streak to four games with a single to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Three batters later, third baseman Ian Hollick got Hibbitts across the plate to give UNM a 1-0 lead.
The Horned Frogs (10-10, 1-2 MWC) made a push in the bottom of the sixth, closing the Lobos lead to 5-2 on a two-run double by shortstop Bryan Kervin.
But Smith got out of the inning and did not allow another run until the bottom of the ninth when TCU's Matt Vern hit a solo home run to start the inning.
Brandon Hewett came in to close out the game, preserving the win for Smith and picking up his first save of the season. Smith (1-1) gave up eight hits, three earned runs, and three walks, and struck out three in eight innings of work. Hewett gave up only one hit in his inning of work. Sean Hoelscher (1-2) took the loss for the Horned Frogs.
The Lobos (13-9, 3-3 MWC) will face all non-conference competition this week in Albuquerque as New Mexico State and Vermont come to Isotopes Park. The Route 66 Casino Hotel Rio Grande Rivalry continues on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 25-26. Game time both days is 6 p.m. Vermont will come to town, Friday-Sunday, March 28-30, for a four-game series.
