FARMINGTON, N.M. --- Senior Bobby LaFromboise threw his second consecutive complete game of the season Friday night as the University of New Mexico baseball team beat Air Force, 7-1, at Ricketts Park. LaFromboise (4-2) maintained a no-hitter through six innings, while Kevin Atkinson and Coty Wilson put home runs over the right field fence to get the Lobos (22-12, 6-4 MWC) on the scoreboard.
"Bobby LaFromboise kept us in the ball game tonight," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "Kevin Atkinson and Coty Wilson each had a home run and hit the ball really hard tonight. We just need to get more aggressive at the plate as a team."
Atkinson followed up a Brian Cavazos-Galvez single with a home run to put New Mexico up 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
Falcons starter David Miller (1-3) gave way to Alex Truesdale in the fourth inning after hitting Cavazos-Galvez and walking Atkinson to start the inning. Truesdale held off the Lobos until the seventh inning.
New Mexico added five runs in the seventh, including the two-run homer by Wilson to give the Lobos a 6-0 lead. Wilson led the Lobos at the plate as a pinch hitter going 2-for-2. The lead increased to 7-0 when catcher Rafael Neda scored on an error by the Falcons first baseman.
Air Force (11-20, 0-9 MWC) avoided the shutout with a single run in the ninth by Nathan Carter, 7-1.
The series continues on Saturday, April 12. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Ricketts Park. The Lobos will host a youth clinic at 10 a.m. at Roberto Clemente Field.
