CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-- The 33rd-ranked University of New Mexico men's tennis team defeated South Alabama at the HEB Tournament of Champions Team Tennis Classic, 4-0, in third round action. The Lobos finished the weekend 2-1, after picking up a 4-1 win on Friday against No. 73 Western Michigan and losing 4-1 to host No. 52 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UNM is now 9-2 on the season.
The Lobos were fueled in double play by underclassmen. Freshman Phil Anderson paired up with sophomore Joe Wood for the first time this season for an 8-6 victory over Leo Dominguez and Dauw Kruger at the No. 2 position. Freshmen Elliot Chang and Ben Dunbar didn't allow a single point to Aaron Krisan and Marek Sramek, winning 8-0, at the No. 3 slot.
In singles the Lobos picked up wins from seniors Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki. Parkes defeated Sramek 6-0, 6-2 for his third win in the No.1 spot this weekend. The Southport Merseyside, England, product is 10-1 this spring and ranks 103rd in the nation in singles. Kassautzki's 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 slot over Romain Bocaert makes puts him at 7-3 in singles. Chang handed Krisan a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to improve to 5-1.
"Overall it was a good weekend," Lobos head coach Alan Dils said. "The conditions were very windy and that made it difficult, but our guys didn't complain and put forth their best effort. It was a competitive event."
UNM returns home to host four consecutive matches, beginning with Wichita State on Friday, March 13, at 6 p.m. at the UNM Tennis Complex.
