ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico women's soccer head coach Kit Vela announced the signing of five athletes for the 2004 season. Jordan Johnson, Anna Neu, Katelyn Ley, Amber Wetsch and Terryn Granados will all sport the cherry and silver in the fall.
"It is a solid recruiting class that will bring new dimensions to an already strong and youthful Lobo team," Vela said. "We are looking toward the future."
Johnson is a 5'6" forward coming out of Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, Okla. A four-year letterwinner in soccer, Johnson led her team to three consecutive State 4A Championships, Regional Championships, District Championships and Metro Lakes Conference Championships. She was named to the NSCAA Region IV team for 2004, as well as All-District in 2003 and All-Conference in 2001. Johnson was in the Top 10 in the state in 2001 with her 14 assists and in the Top Five in 2003 for scoring with her 24 goals.
"Jordan is a spit-fire forwared out of Tulsa, Okla.," Vela said. "We are real excited about what she will bring to our line and goal-scoring contingency."
Neu joins the Lobos after a stellar athletic career at Conestoga High School in Murray, Neb. Neu is a four-year letterwinner in cross country and a three-year letterwinner in soccer and basketball. She has been a starter on the varsity team all three years of soccer and was made team captain as a junior. She is a two-time state team honorable mention and a member of the second team Class B All- State team as a sophomore. In three seasons, Neu has scored 40 goals, 24 assists.
"She is a very fluid, central midfielder," Vela said. "We are looking forward to the new dimension she will bring to the team."
Ley, a four-year letterwinner in soccer and three-year letterwinner in hockey, starts her career as a Lobo after a successful run at Stillwater High School in Stillwater, Minn. Ley helped her team to two second place Section 3AA finished and one second place finished at the State finals. She has garnered several honors including All-Tournament team, All-Sectional team, All-Conference and All-State selections. Ley led her team in scoring and assists her senior year.
"Katelyn is very versatile and a tremendous ahtlete," Vela said. "She will make an impact wherever she plays on the field."
Granados, an Albuquerque native, comes out of La Cueva High School where she lettered in soccer for three years. As the captain, Granados led her team to two third place finishes in the State for section 5A and one state championship in 2002. In 2002 she was named honorable mention to both the All-District 5A and All-State teams. In 2003 she was an All-District and All-State first team selection.
"Terryn is one of the top local players and is technical and hard working," Vela said. "She will bring depth to the midfield."
Wetsch, also an Albuquerque-born athlete and teammate of Granado at La Cueva, joins the Lobos with an impressive resume. Wetsch was a 5A All-State team defender, an All-Metro team honoree and a All-District team member. She was also the MVP of the Farmer Insurance APS Tournament.
"Amber is another top local talent," Vela said. "She is a very fiesty defender who will work in with our solid back line for the future."
