UNM Women's Soccer Summer Camps Information Now Available

The University of New Mexico women's soccer program is gearing up for another fun and educational summer as it offers a new year of soccer summer camps to young players eager to learn more about the game from experienced professional college coaches and Division I college athletes.

Vela Soccer Academy Day Camps
All prices include T-shirt and camp ball

Striker Academy
Session 1:
June 13-16
Session 2: August 1-4
Time: 9am-3pm Cost: $235
Ages 10 and up

The Striker Academy is for competitive players who are looking to take their game to the next level. At the Academy players will focus on increasing their intensity as well as their technical and tactical play. Morning sessions will focus primarily on technical skills while the afternoon sessions will concentrate on incorporating good technique into tactical play. Players at the Striker Academy will also receive video analysis from VSA coaches.

Goalkeeper Academy
Session 1:
June 13-16
Session 2: August 1-4
Time: 9am-3pm Cost: $235
Ages 10 and up

The Goalkeeper Academy is for keepers looking to gain that extra edge over the competition. Keepers will be trained by the top coaches in the state. Sessions will focus on all aspects of the goalkeeper's game: breakaways, footwork, positioning, diving, distribution and leadership on the field. Goalkeepers at the Academy will receive video analysis from VSA coaches.

Junior Lobo Camp
Session 1:
June 13-16
Session 2: August 1-4
Time: 9am-12pm - $70 OR 9am-3pm -$135
Ages 5-10

Junior Lobo Camp provides an opportunity for players new to the game of soccer to learn basic soccer skills. Junior Lobo Camp features coaching from current Lobo players as well as local club coaches. The purpose of this camp is to teach players the fundamentals of soccer in a fun environment.

Vela Soccer Academy Residential Camps
Prices include T-shirt, camp ball, 3 meals a day for residential campers and lunch and dinner for commuters

Striker and Goalkeeper Academies
July 11-15 - $500 residential/$425 commuter
Check in: 10am-noon July 11 (lunch provided)
Check out: 5pm-6pm July 15 (no dinner)

Residential camps provide an excellent opportunity for players to spend a dedicated week working on improving the technical, tactical and mental aspects of their game. The residential camps are intended for the serious soccer player who is committed to bringing their game to the next level. Morning sessions will focus on technique, afternoons will be devoted to tactics and the evenings will consist of games where players are afforded the opportunity to bring their whole game together. Sessions will be video taped and all players will receive video analysis from camp coaches.

Housing/Meals

Housing for the residential camp will be on-campus in Coronado Dorm on Redondo Avenue. All meals will be provided in our cafeteria, La Posoda. Residential campers will receive 3 meals a day in the dining hall. Commuters will be provided with lunch and dinner and are expected to provide their own breakfast.

Transportation to and from Camp

The Albuquerque Sunport is the local airport. Most major airlines, including Southwest, have daily flights in and out of Albuquerque. Transportation from the Sunport to camp can be arranged for a $20 fee. Please contact us at the below number to arrange transportation.

Chaperones and Athletic Trainers

Camps will be staffed by professional coaches as well as current members of the UNM Women's team. Residential camps will have a staff member on duty in the dorms at all times when training sessions are not taking place. Camps will also have a certified Athletic Trainer on staff at all times.

Medical Coverage

All participants in Vela Soccer Academies must have their own primary medical insurance. A secondary policy is purchased by the Camp to cover any additional insurance needs. Each camper/parent must complete a medical release form in order to participate in the Vela Soccer Academy.

Coaching Staff

Kit Vela
Head Coach, UNM Women's Soccer

In just her second season at UNM, Kit boasted the best record for UNM Women's Soccer since 1996, at 12-8-1. She also led New Mexico to its best season ever in the Mountain West Conference in her first stint as a collegiate head coach in 2002. Kit's success was recognized by her peers who voted her MWC Coach of the year in 2002. Kit was a 4 year letter winner at Brown University in both soccer and softball.

Jorge Vela
Assistant and Goalkeeper Coach, UNM Women's Soccer

Jorge is one of the finest Goalkeeper Coaches in the nation. He has worked with collegiate, regional and national level goalkeepers. Jorge has also worked with keepers at Wake Forest,USC,Portland,and UCLA. He currently coaches a U-15 team in Albuquerque. Jorge played professionally in the USISL.

Guest Coaches and 2005 UNM Women's Soccer Team

Current Lobo players will be coaching at all Vela Soccer Academy camps. This is a great opportunity to learn from your local college team. You'll have the opportunity not only to work with the Lobos, but also to get the inside story on what college soccer is really like.

Facilities

UNM Women's Soccer Camps, operated by Vela Soccer Academy), will take place at UNM's South Soccer Complex. The facilities are home to the premier playing fields in Albuquerque which are adjacent to classrooms, the UNM athletic training room and the Lobo weightroom. The complex is located at Avenida de Caesar Chavez and Buena Vista, just southwest of the UNM football stadium.

What to Bring To Camp

Day Camp: shin-guards, cleats, extra T-shirt, water jug, sunscreen, lunch, and snack

Residential Camp: all required day camp gear as well as: Running shoes, towels, toiletries, pajamas, snack and money for incidentals

The Vela Soccer Academy will provide bedding as well as a camp T-shirt and Lobo Camp ball.
