ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The University of New Mexico men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Balloon Fiesta Invite. Plenty of Lobo newcomers were able to get in some fall practice as nine teams participated in the annual invite.
Newcomer Phil Anderson won two singles matches. He defeated Wilton Atkins from Western New Mexico, 6-3, 6-1, and also notched a win over Northern Colorado's Calix Van Lier.
Fellow freshman Matthew Neeld also had two victories, defeating Air Force's Will Brown, 6-1, 6-1, and Western New Mexico's Francisco Pereira, 6-3, 6-1.
Newcomer Carl Ho defeated Robin Pezzutto of NAU, 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Andrew Archer defeated Western New Mexico's Devin Stroman, 6-1, 6-1, but fell to Miles Maloy of Air Force, 6-4, 6-5.
Returning junior Chandler Brass couldn't hold on against Kyle Lynch of Western New Mexico, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles action, Anderson and Ho defeated Brelin Powell and Jake Tracey of NAU, 8-2, while the pair of Archer and Neeld defeated Northern Colorado's Andy Green and Mike Kingsley 8-0.
The Balloon Fiesta Invite continues tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Lobo Tennis Complex.
