ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball will travel to Lawrence, Kan., this weekend to compete in the Jayhawk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas from March 9-11. The Lobos are 2-7 heading into Friday's game with Drake and have already played a difficult slate this season. UNM has faced four nationally-ranked opponents this spring and will play five games this weekend against tough foes.
The Lobos are hitting .241 as a unit with freshman Katie Gilmore leading the way with a .385 average. Gilmore has started every game and leads the team with 2 home runs, 10 hits, 3 doubles and 8 RBI. Sophomore Analise Rubalcava has been stellar at third and is hitting .286 at the plate. UNM has reached base 81 times in nine games and has stolen 15-of-17 bases.
The Lobos have gone with three pitchers including senior Caley Peterson, junior Kelly Ninemire and freshman Tori Rogers. All have made six appearances this spring with Ninemire and Rogers recording victories.
UNM will play a doubleheader Friday against Drake at 9:30 a.m. and North Dakota State at 11:45 a.m. It will be the second time in school history that the Lobos have faced the Bulldogs and the first meeting with the Bison. Saturday, UNM opens with KU at 11:45 a.m. before entering bracket play during the afternoon and all day Sunday. KU and the Lobos have played 20 games with the Jayhawks leading the series, 16-4.
