LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost a tough match to New Mexico State, 29-31, 30-23, 30-17, 30-28. The Lobos are now 7-1 on the season.
"We played terrible tonight," said UNM head coach Jeff Nelson. "I'm disappointed in the performance of our setters and Jeanne Fairchild tonight. We needed everyone to be in this game, especially a rivalry match."
In Game One, the teams tied 13 times before New Mexico took the lead for good. The teams tied at 29, then Jeanne Fairchild got the lead for the Lobos on a kill. Fairchild and Kerri Beck blocked an Aggie attack for the game-winner, 31-29.
The start of Game Two looked familiar for the Lobos as the Aggies built a seven-point lead, 11-4. But New Mexico chipped away at the lead and closed to within two, 21-19, on a service ace by Kelsi Phillips. But the Aggies built the lead back, winning 30-23.
The Aggies came out of the intermission ready to go, continually building a lead in Game Three without letting the Lobos get back in range, 30-17.
Game Four looked like it belonged to the Lobos as they took the lead, 14-13 and held it to 24-23. NMSU took the lead 25-24 on an attack error by Jeanne Fairchild. The Lobos took advantage of several Aggie attack errors, closing to within one, 28-27. But UNM errors gave the Aggies the match-win, 30-28.
The Lobos return to action on Friday, Sept. 7, when they host Northern Colorado in the first session of the Comcast Lobo Invitational. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Johnson Center.
