Laramie, Wyo. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team dropped its final regular season game, losing 5-1 at Wyoming on Saturday afternoon. UNM senior Coco D'Angelo scored her third goal of the season off a pass from freshman Katelyn Ley to cut the Wyoming lead to 2-1 15 minutes into the second half, but the Cowgirls countered with three goals in the final 10 minutes of play as the Lobos pressed forward looking for the equalizer. New Mexico fell to 5-11-0 on the year while Wyoming improved to 10-5-4.
Wyoming got on the board early in the match when Mari Gomes added her eighth goal of the year at the 25:47 mark. The Cowgirls pushed its lead to 2-0 on Lindsey Vossbrink's goal at the 68th minute. D'Angelo's third goal of the season gave New Mexico some momentum in the second half before Wyoming's Melissa Bowman scored back to back goals at the 84:31 and 85:48 minute marks. Vossbrink came back for her second goal of the day with 2 minutes left in regulation to cap the scoring.
In a match that was much closer than the score indicated, both teams had a relatively equal amount of scoring chances. Wyoming outshot the Lobos 13-12 and had 2 corner kicks compared to UNM's one. New Mexico goalkeeper Kristen Winters made five saves in 90 minutes of play while Wyoming's Ashley Sheppard had seven saves.
New Mexico finished the regular season with 1-5-0 Mountain West Conference record. The Lobos travel to Provo, Utah next week for the 2004 MWC Championships held November 3-6. The championship bracket will be released Monday, November 1. All conference tournament matches will be held at South Stadium on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo.
