DENVER, Colo.-- The 44th-ranked New Mexico men's tennis team improved to 6-1 with a 5-2 win over 48th-ranked Denver late Friday night. The Lobo underclassmen stepped up to help UNM capture its fourth straight win.

In doubles action, UNM won two matches to remain undefeated when capturing the doubles point. Senior Graeme Kassautzki and sophomore Joe Wood defeated Denver's Benny Althaus and Yannick Wiehs, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. Kassuatzki and Wood have won six consecutive doubles matches together after losing their season opener. Freshmen Elliot Chang and Ben Dunbar collected an 8-4 win over Varun Gunaseelan and Johan Gunnarsson at the No. 3 slot to give the Lobos the advantage heading into singles.

New Mexico picked up four wins in singles, including three from Lobo underclassmen. Chang, who made his singles debut with two wins last weekend, improved to 3-0 with a 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-4 win over Weihs at the No. 4 position. Wood defeated Gunaseelan in two sets, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot. Freshman Ben Dunbar defeated Gunnarsson 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Miles Bugby notched the only senior singles win with a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 12-10 victory over Althaus.

"Denver is a solid team and where we played is a difficult place to pick up a win," Lobos head coach Alan Dils said. "For our guys to come out and get a win at Denver's home court is big. Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki have been our rocks, but to have the younger guys step up the way they did shows the improvements we are making."

New Mexico returns home next weekend, hosting Montana State on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Lobo Tennis Complex.
