ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior centerfielder Matt Young (Murphy, Texas) was named the Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Young currently leads the MWC in batting (.545), slugging percentage (.909) and on-base percentage (.643). This marks the first time Young has earned the honor.
Young was 6-for-11 over the weekend at the Ultimate Dugout Baseball Fiesta Tournament, including two triples, four RBI and six runs scored. He tied a career-high with four hits on Opening Day vs. Kent State and went 2-for-4 with three runs against No. 23 Nebraska. The centerfielder was also perfect in the field with five putouts and no errors.
The New Mexico baseball team returns to action this weekend (Feb. 27-29) for the Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic at College Station, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M. The three-team tournament includes UNM, No. 20 Texas A&M and Arkansas.
