ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico softball team dropped a heartbreaker to San Diego State Saturday, 7-6, in 10 innings at Lobo Field. The Lobos honored five seniors during the final game of the 2010 season. UNM managed six runs on seven hits, and forced extra innings against the second-place Aztecs. Lobo senior Erin Brandow led the way going 2-for-3 with 4 RBI. Senior Cristin Anderson scored twice for New Mexico, while sophomore Kerry Hodgins went 2-for-4.
The Lobos finished the year with an 11-37 overall record and went 1-14 during Mountain West Conference play. SDSU improved to 33-14 and 11-4 in league play.
New Mexico battled throughout the game and rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Lobos showed a fearless attitude in the season finale.
The Lobos jumped ahead 2-0 after plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Jessica Lujan-Dresslar put the Lobos on the board with a two-run single down the third base line. The hot shot to third allowed Brandow and sophomore Shenise Cox to score.
SDSU quickly erased the lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Aztecs opened the inning with a base hit to right by Ashley Rose. Jessica Camello plated the first run on an RBI single. Brittany Knudsen followed with a run-scoring double. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Justeen Maeva.
The Aztecs extended its 3-2 lead with two more runs in the fourth inning. Rose belted a two-run homer over the right field fence. It was her second home run of the year and gave SDSU a 5-2 lead.
New Mexico started to climb its way back into the game in the fifth inning. The Lobos opened the frame with a single to left field by Hodgins. Anderson reached after being hit by a pitch in the very next at-bat. UNM had two on with no outs before SDSU racked up two quick outs. A wild pitch advanced runners to second and third with two outs. Brandow came through with a clutch two-run double to right. The Lobos trailed 5-4 after five innings.
The Aztecs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and seemed poised for the victory. SDSU took a 6-4 lead into the final three outs.
The Lobos came storming back with two runs to tie. Hodgins started the inning with a single to center. Anderson was hit by a pitch setting the stage for Brandow. An almost identical situation as the fifth inning and Brandow came through again. The Albuquerque native drilled a double to right with two outs.
Both teams went back-and-forth in extra innings, before SDSU won the game with a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning. Eva Sahatdjian blasted her third home run of the year into the grandstands in left. The shot gave the Aztecs a 7-6 victory.
New Mexico utilized three pitchers Saturday with sophomore Samantha Gatson (3-10) taking the loss. Gatson, who came on in relief during the fourth inning, pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Freshman Kaela DeBroeck started for the Lobos and threw the first three innings. Freshman Kari Gutierrez made a brief appearance allowing two runs on three hits.
SDSU starter Samantha Beasley got the win and improved to 28-9 overall. Beasley pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Beasley was relieved by Bailey Micetich mid-way through the game but returned to seal the victory for the Aztecs. Micetich went 2 2/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits.
