UNM Head Coach Mike Locksley
"Today was the culmination of the 2011 Spring Ball season for us, and I like the way the team competed today. It's still a work in progress, but I think what you saw out there was that the athleticism of our team has increased, the knowledge of our system has increased, and now what we have to do is get ourselves ready for a great summer of training.
We're going to prepare ourselves for our summer camp down in Ruidoso and everything now is geared towards Sept. 3 vs. Colorado State. Our players are excited and I think they can feel the culture shift. We're a tight knit group and seeing the team play with the energy that you have to play with, I'm pleased with the way we finished up spring football."
What areas did you see that you think need the most improvement?
"I think that it's going to be all three phases in my opinion. I thought the receivers didn't play as well as they did all spring, both quarterbacks need to continue to improve, we have to get B.R. Holbrook ready so that we can throw him into the mix. The good thing coming out of this spring though is the unity of the team.
The unity is amazing and that to me is probably the biggest thing that I've seen in the culture shift. The guys are playing together, they care about each other and I really like the unity of the staff. I think that if we can stick together and continue to improve the way we have these past 15 practices we'll be able to be the team I envision us being."
Is it frustrating that one of the quarterbacks hasn't really jumped out yet?
"We've got a rule in place that says that you don't lose your starting position due to injury. B.R. Holbrook was our starter last year and obviously for a guy to take the starting position they have to be above and beyond.
I thought both quarterbacks improved, and they improved to a level in which I'm ready to name one of the young guys a starter. I'd say that when you look at the 15 practices we've had you've definitely seen improvement, but not the type of improvement to say one of these guys is our guy.
What we need to do is get B.R. healthy, continue to see the other guys improve and I see it being a really good competition going into Ruidoso."
