DENTON, Texas - The New Mexico softball team (2-10) fell to North Texas, 8-6, and Wichita State, 4-3, in day one action of the Betlin Mean Green Classic hosted by North Texas.
In game one against the Mean Green, North Texas jumped on the board first with two runs in the fifth. New Mexico fired back in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Sophomore Ryanne Hodgins doubled to drive in classmate Becky Dover and freshman Ashley Allen. Senior Ashley Shartzer followed with a grand slam that scored Hodgins, junior Kristina Schmallen and sophomore Amy Ray.
Two two-RBI singles in the seventh gave the Mean Green the win. New Mexico tried to rally with runners on first and second with two out but freshman Christina Rios couldn't keep the game alive, flying out to left field.
Junior Katie Gregg suffered the loss, tossing 6.2 innings for eight hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Game two was the Stephanie De La Riva and Katie McGeeney show. De La Riva hit a two-run homer in the first that brought home McGeeney. In the fourth, McGeeney and De La Riva had RBI singles.
New Mexico chipped away at the 4-0 lead, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Dover singled to left to bring home junior Cassie Chavez and Allen doubled to left center to drive in Dover. In the fifth, Shartzer singled down the left line, allowing freshman Lindsey Elcess to score.
Senior Ashley Perkins took the loss, hurling a five-hit complete game for five walks and eight strikeouts.
New Mexico returns to the field tomorrow, facing Southwest Missouri State at 11 a.m. and Western Michigan at 2 p.m.
