Burnaby, British Columbia -- Sophomore David Chiotti made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give New Mexico a 78-77 victory over the University of Calgary in the first game of the Lobos' Candian Exhibition Tour. Chiotti finished with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Calgary took a 77-76 lead with 30 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Chris Wright. On the Lobos' decisive final possession, senior guard Javin Tindall drove and dished to Chiotti, who was fouled on the play. Chiotti, who missed his first four charities of the game, sank the two that counted.
UNM led 42-38 at halftime and built a 72-62 advantage with 5:39 left before Calgary stormed back.
Tindall paced UNM with 22 points, making 9 of 12 shots from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point. Sophomore guard Jeff Hart added 10. Whit Hornsberger led Calgary with 16 points.
The Lobos shot 50% from the floor (30-60) and from beyond the arc (9-18), but they were just 9 of 17 from the line. UNM outrebounded Calgary 34-29.
Game two of the Lobos' four-game tour will be played Friday at Trinity Western University. Tipoff is 9 p.m. Mountain Time. There is no radio coverage of the game.
