ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- San Diego State erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning and held on to defeat New Mexico, 11-2, Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field in six innings. Freshman Katie Gilmore highlighted the Lobos performance after going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. SDSU improves to 25-17 and 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference. UNM drops to 11-14 overall and pulls even at 1-1 in the conference.

SDSU scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Monica Alnes to score Brittany Knudsen. Knudsen and Tamani Wells lead off the game with back-to-back singles.

UNM took the lead in the fourth inning, after scoring two runs on two hits. Senior Amy Ray led off the inning with a double to right center field and eventually came around to score on a double by Gilmore. The final run of the inning scored on an SDSU throwing error.

The Aztecs would not go away and quickly put the game out of reach with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. SDSU had five bunt singles in the inning and managed to record 11 hits. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Megan McDonald. The Aztecs reached the run-rule limit in the sixth after scoring two runs on a double by Lindsey Marquez.

Junior Kelly Ninemire took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing nine runs on 12 hits. With the loss, Ninemire falls to 6-8 this season. Freshman Tori Rogers came on in relief to pitch the final 1.1 innings. Rogers faced nine batters and gave up two runs on six hits.

Gilmore had her fifth multiple hit game of her career to lead the Lobos. UNM collected seven hits against SDSU starter Christina Ross. Ross was the winning pitcher after throwing a complete game and holding the Lobos to two runs. Ross moves to 17-8 with the win.

SDSU sprayed 18 hits throughout the game with Knudsen, Wells and Marquez collecting three each. Marquez was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while McDonald was 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI.

The final game of the series with SDSU is scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be available on GameTracker and All Access video through the UNM athletic website www.GoLobos.com.
