ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--Junior Rachel Fields scored the Lobos' lone goal in a 1-0 win over the Air Force Falcons tonight at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos reach the 10 win mark for the first time since 2002 and improve to 10-2-2 on the season and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The Falcons fall to 2-11-0 on the season and 2-0 in MWC play.
"It was a hard fought game," said head coach Kit Vela. "I was real happy we found that goal. We played hard for 90 minutes. We have some things we need to clean up but I'm proud of the girls effort."
Fields found herself in the right place at the right time as she put away a her own rebound off Air Force keeper Ariana Green's hands to put the Lobos on top for good. The ball was first blasted by junior Alexis Ball but was saved by Green. The goal was fields second of the season and third of her career.
The Lobo defense was tough and tenacious the whole match allowing only seven shots with one on goal. The backline of senior Jess Quador, junior Elizabeth Lambert and sophomores Roxie McFarland and Gianna Cavuoto held the Falcons to only two shots in the first half.
Redshirt freshman Kelli Cornell posted her 10th win and ninth shutout of the season. The win puts Cornell in a tie for third place all-time for wins in a season. Cornell also moves in to a tie for second place all-time for shutouts in a season.
The Lobos will hit the road to the state of Utah to take on BYU on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. The match against BYU will nationally televised on BYU-TV and will be replayed on the Mountain Television Network on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. MT. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
