ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Justin Howard went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and junior Mike Lachapelle scattered nine hits over eight innings to lead the Lobo baseball team to a 13-4 win over in-state rival New Mexico State today at Isotopes Park. New Mexico improves to 9-5 on the season. New Mexico State falls to 10-7. With the Lobo victory the two teams split the season series at 2-2.
"Mike Lachapelle pitched his butt off today," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "Mike was locked in today. We threw strikes today, which we didn't do yesterday. The difference between today and yesterday was that today we pitched with command."
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Howard launched a ball into the Lobo bullpen for his second home run of the season and made the score 2-1. Senior Adam Courcha had his best day at the plate this season going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior Ryan Honeycutt went 3-for-4 for the second straight day and made his first start of the season in left field. Senior Chris Juarez went 3-for-5 from the plate with one RBI. True freshmen Alex Allbritton and Mitchell Garver went 3-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively. Each had two RBIs.
Lachapelle, now 2-0 on the season, threw a gem in his longest outing going eight innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. Lachapelle held a threesome of Aggies, Ryan Aguayo, Ben Harty and Christopher Auten, who came in to the game hitting above .400 to just 2-10 from the plate today.
