SAN DIEGO, Calif. - University of New Mexico senior Willy Kesler was named first-team All-Mountain West Conference this evening at the 2010 Conoco Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship banquet. Junior All-America candidate Rafael Neda, and seniors Justin Howard and Chris Juarez were selected to the second team. The award is the first for Howard, Juarez and Kesler. Neda takes home his third All-MWC selection.
"All four of these student-athletes are great baseball players," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "I'm proud of them and I'm proud that they are Lobos. I'm proud of all the hard work they have put in this year."
Kesler finished the regular season with a 6-2 record and a 3.51 ERA. He went 5-1 in MWC play and is ranked second with a 2.72 ERA in league play. The Thornton, Colo., native was a two-time MWC Pitcher of the Week honoree in 2010.
Neda was named to the first team in 2009 and earned second-team honors as a freshman in 2008. Neda is ranked sixth in the MWC with a .362 batting average. The Obregon, Mexico native earned MWC Player of the Week honors during the season and was a candidate for the Johnny Bench Award.
Howard is currently second in the nation with 111 hits and a .463 batting average. The Ennis, Texas native is ranked first with 11 doubles in MWC play. Howard is currently second on the UNM single season hits list.
Juarez is ranked eighth with a .417 batting average in league play. The Lakewood, Colo., native is hitting .414 on the overall season.
The Lobos play their first game of the 2010 Conoco MWC Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 26 at 4 p.m. (MT). Every game will be televised on The Mountain Sports Network and can be seen on Comcast channel 276 and DirecTV channel 616. All Lobo games will be broadcast on 101.7 FM The TEAM.
