LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team posted its third straight win in a 6-2 victory over Illinois State at the UNLV Nike Classic today. Sophomore Jennifer Williams had a career day with three goals and two assists for eight points that ties a school record for the most points scored in a single match. The Moreno Valley, Calif. native is the first Lobo in head coach Kit Vela's nine-year tenure to record a hat trick. The Lobos are off to their best start since 1997 and improve to 3-0-0 on the season. Illinois State falls to 0-2-1 on the season.
"We were very good at times today," said Vela. "We finished out shots and that's the good news. We have to go back and fix a few things but I'm proud of our effort. We never gave up and we played hard to the end. Jennifer Williams played well today. She has a lot of ability."
Williams tied a 12 year old record with eight total points in the match. Laurie Hegedorn set the record on Sept. 21, 1996 against South Alabama.
"Scoring three goals was really exciting," said Williams. "I got really good balls from my teammates. It wasn't me alone, I just took the balls and shot the shots right."
Williams got the Lobos rolling in the seventh minute of the match as she picked up a through ball from junior Rachel Fields and blasted a shot that bounced off Illinois State goalkeeper Sasha Reiber's hands and into the back of the net. The goal was Williams second of the season and sixth of her career.
A short four minutes later Williams crossed a ball to the top of the box and found a wide open Nicole Reed who chipped the ball over Reiber from 18-yards out. The goal was Reed's first of the season and fourth of her career.
The second half was another Williams showcase as she netted her third and fourth goals of the season and seventh and eight of her career. Williams received a picture perfect cross from sophomore Jael Fanning and headed the ball to the back post to put the Lobos up 3-0 in the 52nd minute of the match.
Using her speed and nose for the goal Williams dashed and darted her way into the box and put the ball far post for the hat trick only 1:47 later in the 53rd minute.
Sophomore Zaneta Wyne netted her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career off a though ball from Williams. Wyne was able to beat the ISU's backup keeper Katie Grill-Donovan one-on-one to put the Lobos on top 5-0
Junior Kate Wyrick blasted a ball from the top of the box on the right wing that skipped right past the keeper for the Lobos' sixth and final goal. The goal was Wyrick's first of the season and fourth of her career.
Freshman keeper Kelli Cornell picked up her third consecutive win and has already made a dent in the UNM record book. She is now tied for sixth place all-time with three career wins. The San Clemente, Calif. native fought off an attacking ISU offense and picked up four saves.
The Lobos six goals is the most scored since a 7-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Sept. 28, 2008
The Lobos travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., Sept. 4-6 for the 9th Annual Mountain Classic where they will take on Oakland and Big 10 opponent Iowa. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
