ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Kelly Therkelsen and freshman Allison Suiter were red hot at the net, leading the Lobos to a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside in the morning session of the Hilton Albuquerque Classic. Suiter hit .526 (12K-2E-19TA) while Therkelsen hit .346 (10K-1E-26TA).
"Offensively, Allie has a lot of firepower," head coach Kelley McKee said. "She is always up and available in the air. She is adding balance to our offense."
Trailing 10-18 in game 1, Suiter slammed down a kill to start a 12-3 Lobo run. The teams battled evenly to 29 all when Therkelsen recorded a kill to put UNM at game point. Freshman Kathleen Crawley went back to serve, getting an attack error on the Highlanders for the winning point at 31-29.
The Lobos dominated in game two, outhitting UCR .444 to .062, going on to a 30-15 win. Suiter was a perfect 6-for-6 (1.000 attack pct.) while Therkelsen was 4-for-6 (.667 attack pct.). UCR's Ashley Halperin led the team for the second consecutive game, putting down four kills.
In game three, New Mexico held two five-point leads but saw it dwindle late as the Highlanders tied the game at 24. Two forceful kills from freshman Rose Morris gave the Lobos the momentum it needed, sending them to a 30-26 win.
Besides Therkelsen and Suiter's stellar performance, Morris added seven kills while sophomore Joelle Ingram and junior Jennifer Heasty chipped in with six. Kwasigroch recorded her first double-double of the season, dishing out a team-high 37 assists and 11 digs.
"We looked at our hitting and decision making from last night and made better decisions today," McKee said.
The Lobos complete the tournament this evening with undefeated Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks downed Utah State, 3-1 in the earlier match.
