ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.) was named the Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month for September the conference office announced Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon. This marks the fourth time in her career Downs has won the award.
Downs captured her first individual tournament championship at last week's Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course. The preseason All-American tied a 54-hole course record with a score of 70-68-74-212 (-7) and led the Lobos to their third consecutive Dick McGuire team title. Her 36-hole score of 138 also set a new course record as did the Lobos' overall team score of 871.
Downs, a two-time Mountain West Golfer of the Year, shot a 54-hole total of 231 (83-75-73) at the NCAA Preview earlier in the month, helping the Lobos finish ninth at the prestigious tournament. Her 73.8 stroke average is currently tied for second best in the conference.
Downs was the only player in the conference to earn Golfer of the Month honors twice in 2002-03 (September and April). As a freshman, Downs garnered Golfer of the Month honors in October of 2001.
The No. 6 New Mexico women's golf team returns to action Oct. 17-19 at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
