ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday to Iowa State at Lobo Field. The Cyclones won game one, 18-5, in five innings and needed 10 innings to defeated the Lobos 7-5 in game two. New Mexico falls to 8-10 on the year while Iowa State improves to 15-8 overall.
Iowa State scored three runs in the first, six in the second and nine in the third to pull away from New Mexico in game one. The Cyclones pounded out 14 hits and 18 runs and took advantage of five Lobo errors.
UNM scored five runs on 11 hits and had eight different players get a hit in the first game. Senior Samantha Hughes was 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Sophomore Tianna George was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
The Lobos jumped ahead in game two 4-0 after four innings. UNM scored a run in the first and two in the third. Freshman Shenise Cox had a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Iowa State rallied to score two in the fifth and three in the sixth and took a 6-5 lead. UNM responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and forced extra innings.
In the 10th inning, the Cyclones took advantage of the international run and scored two runs to win the game, 7-5.
Senior Analise Rubalcava led the way for New Mexico in game two. Rubalcava was 3-for-5 with an RBI and pitched 2 2/3 innings in a losing battle. Rubalcava, who took both losses, fell to 5-6 on the year with the loss.
