MONTREAL, Quebec – Former University of New Mexico soccer standout Blake Smith recorded the first goal of his MLS career for the Montreal Impact in the team’s 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, May 25. The Texan, who has been a key reserve for the Impact, found the back of the net in the 94th minute of the match. Smith celebrated the goal with his signature backflip he used after his 13 career goals for the Lobos from 2009-2012.

“It felt great to get my first goal. It’s something I worked hard for, and it was special that it came at an important moment to help secure the win for the team,” Smith told reporters in the post-match press conference.

It’s been a whirlwind of activity for former Lobos in the MLS recently. Two weeks ago Smith faced off against his former Lobo teammate Devon Sandoval and Real Salt Lake. The Impact took home the victory as Smith recorded his first professional assist on the game-winning goal.

Blake Smith’s goal for the Impact also comes less than three weeks after Sandoval buried the first goal of his MLS career against the New England Revolution.

Smith and the the Impact are undefeated at home in Stade Saputo in Montreal. The club is also second in the Eastern Division in the MLS with a record of 7-2-2.
