COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior left hander Danny Ray Herrera was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season and the second in his career. UNLV junior outfielder Zach Borba was named the Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Herrera, an Odessa, Texas, native, pitched a complete game shutout vs. Utah Valley State Saturday, the Lobos' first of the season. In 9.0 innings of work, he struck out seven batters, while scattering six hits and walking only one, to collect his second consecutive complete game and third win of the season. It was just the fourth time in Herrera's career that he threw a complete game or a shutout. The seven strikeouts tied for the third most in a single game in his career.
Borba, from Reno, Nev., hit .750 (9-for-12) at the plate with three doubles, three RBI and seven runs scored last week, as UNLV took two of three games from Eastern Michigan last week. In game one vs. Eastern Michigan, he went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. In game two he was 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored in UNM's 18-5 victory. In the final game of the series, Borba went 5-for-5 with two doubles, four runs scored, one run batted in and one stolen base in a 23-5. Defensively, he had four putouts with no errors from the outfield.
