ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico baseball program and the NM Fellowship of Christian Athletes have announced that former Lobo and legendary baseball coach Mark Johnson will speak on “Character and Faith” at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Tow Diehm Facility.

Johnson has had an impact on thousands of people over the course of 41years in coaching and speaking. His experiences in life and as a head coach at the Division I level for the past 38 years have turned him into one of the most sought-after speakers in the country. He spreads messages of living a life of character, integrity and high values.

Coach Johnson is a graduate of the University of New Mexico where he received his bachelor's degree in science and physical education in 1967 and his master's degree in recreation and physical education in 1971. He was an All-Conference player as a member of the Lobos' baseball team in 1965, 1966, and 1967 and earned NCAA All-Region honors in 1967. Johnson was inducted into the University of New Mexico Athletic Hall of Honor during the fall of 2007.

“I am very excited to have Coach Johnson here,” Lobos’ head baseball coach Ray Birmingham said. “He is a great human being and a great Lobo.” Johnson played professional baseball in the New York Mets organization for three years. For 15 years he was an assistant baseball coach at New Mexico, University of Arizona, Mississippi State University, and Texas A&M University. In 1984, he became the head baseball coach at Texas A&M University for the following 21 years. He coached the Sam Houston State Bearkats for the past five seasons before his retirement in 2011.

As head baseball coach at Texas A&M from 1984 to 2005, Johnson won Southwest Conference championships in 1986, 1989, and 1993 and Big 12 league titles in 1998 and 1999. His teams competed in the NCAA playoffs 13 times, making 13 NCAA regional appearances and reaching the College World Series in 1993 and 1999.

Coach Johnson was the Sporting News National Coach of the Year in 1993 and United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year in 1999. He is a member of both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Texas Baseball Hall of Fames.

In January 2007, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented Johnson with the FCA Baseball Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award. In January 2008, Johnson was the first recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association "Ethics In Coaching" Award at the ABCA national convention.
