Against Utah (13-15, 3-6 MWC): New Mexico leads the Utah series, 78-48. The Lobos have won the last five games against the Utes, including an 8-2 win in the opening round of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament. Utah will host two series in Ogden in 2009 due to schedule conflicts with the Salt Lake City Bees - New Mexico (April 9-11) and San Diego State (May 14-16).

Up Next: UNM remains out on the road for two games at Arizona before returning to Isotopes Park for a three-game series with San Diego State. Pack the Park Night is set for Friday, April 17 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $2.

    LOBO BASEBALL QUICK HITS
    • Step 1 - National Recognition (Check) ... The Lobos are still on the radar of the national college baseball polls, receiving votes in several this week. The Lobos were as high as No. 18 in the March 30 Baseball America poll. In 1985, the last time the Lobos cracked the Top 25 in the Baseball America, they climbed as high as No. 14.

    • Lobos Add A Game ... New Mexico picked up one more road game in May to fill out the 56-game regular season schedule. UNM will extend its stay in Northern California with a single game at West Coast Conference member St. Mary's on Monday, May 11. Game time in Moraga, Calif. is set for 1 p.m. (MDT).

    • On The Road Again ... The Lobos will play 17 of their last 23 regular season games on the road. UNM has two home series remaining on the schedule - San Diego State (April 17-19) and UNLV (May 1-3). The Lobos are 21-4 in the friendly confines of Isotopes Park this season.

    • Shaking Up The Rotation ... The Lobos are shaking up the weekend rotation at Utah. Senior John Hesketh will make his usual Friday night start, but will be surrounded by two new weekend starters - junior transfer Edwin Carl on Thursday night and true freshman Rudy Jaramillo.

Step 2 ... Win A Conference Championship (Work In Progress) ... Quick Notes About The Lobos (25-8, 5-4 MWC) ... The Lobos are off to their best start in program history at 25-8, closing in on the 1985 start of 29-8 ... For the first time since 1985, the University of New Mexico baseball team cracked the national polls on March 23, entering the Baseball America poll at No. 21 ... New Mexico was featured in March 19th's Baseball America Weekend Preview for the Stat of the Week - 1.29 triples per game. A big jump from 0.42 in 2008 ... While the outfield saw a variety of lineups to start the season, the infield has remained a constant. Kevin Atkinson (1B), Mike Brownstein (2B), Daniel Gonzalez (SS), and Dane Hamilton (3B) have started every game in the infield. Gonzalez was the last Lobo to play every inning of defense at the same position for UNM. Gonzalez got his first break on March 6 in the 8th inning against Binghamton ... UNM played in the friendly confines of Isotopes Park for 25 of its first 30 games of the 2009 season, that included six consecutive weekends ... After April 1, the Lobos will only be in Albuquerque for 6 of their last 26 regular season games.

Step 3 ... Earn Bid To NCAA Tournament (Work In Progress) ... There are several components involved with earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament, something the Lobos are trying to do for the first time since 1962 ... First, wins are important. There isn't a conversation about the NCAAs if the W's are not starting to pile up. UNM is doing well there at 25-8, Top-20 in the nation in winning percentage ... Next, strength of schedule. According to nationally-recognized baseball website, Boydsworld.com, the Lobos were sitting at 112 on the old SOS ranking. That is about to pick up as the Lobos head deeper into MWC play (TCU - 2; San Diego State - 27; BYU - 19; Utah - 36) and have non-conference series remaining with Arizona (44), Nebraska (20), Stanford (12) and St. Mary's (61) ... And don't forget about that pesky RPI ranking. The NCAA's official RPI will not be released until later in the season, but Boyd's World continues to be one of the closest to what the NCAA will release. Going into Monday, April 6, the Lobos are sitting at 62 after being as high as 28 going into the Northwestern series.

Jaramillo To Make First Collegiate Start ... True freshman Rudy Jaramillo is scheduled to make the first start of his collegiate career on Saturday, April 11 at Utah. The lefty from Marcos de Niza High School in Chandler, Ariz., earned his first win in relief on March 1 vs. Northern Colorado (10-8). He picked up his second win of the season on March 17 against No. 3 Texas A&M in relief (10-6). He is currently second on the team in appearances with 11. It will be the first time a true freshman has started a game in the Ray Birmingham era. The last true freshman to start on the mound was Shane Dyer on May 25, 2007 vs. UNLV in the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

Classmate Gabe Aguilar leads the team with a 0.93 ERA in six appearances. Aguilar, a lefty from Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, picked up two wins in relief appearances at Texas Tech (Feb. 24; 13-10) and against Northern Colorado (Feb. 28; 13-5).
