ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer hosts the Nike Classic this weekend at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos (1-1) battle Long Island (1-1) Friday at 5 p.m. and Utah Valley State Saturday (0-0-1) at 3 p.m. The games are available via gametracker and all-access at www.GoLobos.com. UNM returns home after having three different players score a goal last weekend. The Lobos ranked 16th nationally last year in attendance and second in the Mountain West Conference.
New Mexico split a pair of games last weekend to open the 2007 season. The Lobos hit the road to Oklahoma to battle the nationally-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls and Tulsa. UNM dropped an overtime heartbreaker to OSU Friday night after holding the Cowgirls scoreless for 82 minutes. The Lobos rebounded to dominate Tulsa Sunday in a 2-0 victory. On the weekend, UNM had three different players' record goals and received stellar play defensively. Goalkeepers Shannon Adragan and Kiani Wong both made starts and played well in their first action of the year.
The Lobos are 6-5-3 all-time in home openers and have a 1-3-2 record under head coach Kit Vela. Last season, UNM opened the year with No. 8 Texas. The Lobos pushed the Longhorns to overtime but dropped a 2-1 decision.
Long Island went 1-1 in the opening weekend with a victory over NJIT Sunday. The Blackbirds only goal was scored by Caley Troutman. Troutman returns after starting 21 games last year and was the team's second leading scorer. LIU reached the NCAA Tournament in 2006 after going 13-8-1 overall and winning the Northeast Conference.
Utah Valley State tied Southern Utah last weekend and is led by the United Soccer Conference Player of the Week Jenni Clough. Clough scored the Wolverines only goal of the year in the 63rd minute of a 1-1 draw against the Thunderbirds.
The Nike Classic will conclude Sunday with a neutral game between UVSC and LIU at 10:30 a.m. on the Robertson Practice Field. For more information about UNM athletic visit www.GoLobos.com.
