The University of New Mexico softball team falls 9-5 to Colorado State, Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field. Senior Cristin Anderson went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run for the Lobos. New Mexico ends its home stand with a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against UTEP. GameTracker and live video streaming will be provided for Tuesday's games on GoLobos.com.
Colorado State showed its presence early when leadoff hitter Caitlan Stem hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to get the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Lobos answered back in the bottom of the first inning when Jessica Garcia singled to get on base. With two outs, Garcia stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Shenise Cox then singled to score Garcia and tie the game 1-1.
The Rams took the lead in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs with two outs. With two runners on base, Stem hit her second home run of the game to put Colorado State up 4-1. With bases loaded Christine Thomsen singled to score the final two runs of the inning.
New Mexico scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning off of five hits. Shaunte Duarte led off the inning with a single to right field. Samantha Gatson and Cassandra Kalapsa both singled to load the bases. Kerry Hodgins then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Duarte. With two runners on base, Anderson hit a three-run home run to score the final three runs for the Lobos.
Colorado State scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and one more in the sixth inning to end the game ahead 9-5. Stem led the Rams at the plate going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, four RBIs, and two runs. Robyn Mask went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs. Kelli Eubanks (20-10) received the win in the circle for the Rams and helped her team improve to 26-16 and 4-4 in Mountain West Conference play.
Garcia led the Lobos at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run. Duarte and Kalapsa each went 1-for-3 with a run and Gatson went 1-for-2 with a run. Cox and Hodgins each had an RBI for the Lobos. Kaela DeBroeck (5-15) received the loss for the Lobos in the circle. New Mexico falls to 10-29 on the season and 0-8 in conference action.
