SACRAMENTO, Calif.--The University of New Mexico men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Sacramento State this afternoon on the road at Hornet Soccer Field. Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein described the matchup as being a game of two halves, in which the Lobos came out stronger in the second period but were unable to find the back of the net. The game remained scoreless until Adam Bettencourt netted one for the Hornets at 57:01, cleaning up after a Sac State corner kick and subsequent header by Diego Marroquin. New Mexico drops to 9-6-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, while Sac State improves to 9-5-1 overall and stays unbeaten in conference with a mark of 5-0.
"We came out really tight, but we got through the first half," said Fishbein. "In the second half we had a miscue in the back, gave up a really soft goal, and we weren't able to get one back. That being said, Sac State beat us. That team came out and they played with a ton of heart. They were physical and they didn't make mistakes, while we made the one mistake that cost us the game. Our destiny with the conference is now out of our control a little bit, but we just have to keep moving forward."
Sacramento State was one of two MPSF teams still unbeaten in conference play coming into Friday's league matchups. San Jose State was also perfect, coming into their game against UNLV on Friday night with an MPSF record of 4-0. UNLV snapped San Jose State's eight-game unbeaten streak in that game, however, taking a 1-0 win over the Spartans, who dropped to 4-1 in MPSF play.
The Lobos will take on San Jose State at 2 p.m. this Sunday at Spartan Soccer Field in San Jose, California. Sacramento State will play UNLV on Sunday, and they will face off against San Jose State next Saturday, Nov. 7. The Lobos close out their regular season schedule against UNLV at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 in a game that will double as Senior Night at the UNM Soccer Complex.
