New Mexico vs. Toledo
New Mexico Head Coach Don Flanagan
I thought the key to the game was their (Toledo's) second-chance opportunities. They hit the offensive boards harder than we did and they posted up harder than we did. I thought their effort was better than our effort and it showed throughout the game. The second half they showed that they wanted the game more than we did. We never did get to the free throw line because we weren't attacking enough, and then we settled for the three point shot. We shot 33 of them, and I'm not sure we've ever shot 33 of them. I thought the main thing was that their effort was superior to our effort.
New Mexico Senior Guard Amy Beggin
On where the game got away from New Mexico:
I think, as Coach was saying, boxing out. We had opportunities in the second half where we took the lead and they came back and got some easy rebounds. That's just something that can't happen. That's toughness right there, and they out-toughed us tonight.
Toledo Head Coach Tricia Cullop
We feel very fortunate to win here. This is a very difficult place [to play]. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Flanagan, his staff, and what this program has done. We wrote "focus" on the board, because we didn't feel like we'd played 40 minutes focused yet this year. We knew that in order to win here, we'd have to hang around and remain focused. This is probably the most complete game I've seen our kids play together so far this year, and we had to do it. Yesterday we had 31 turnovers. Today we didn't foul too much and we couldn't-New Mexico shoots 82-percent from the line. I thought we did a better job taking care of the basketball. Eleven turnovers is a record for us this season, because we've been turning it over a lot. Again, very fortunate to get this win and I wish New Mexico nothing but the best. They have a very strong program.
