The University of New Mexico men's soccer team battled with No. 6 Harvard for 110 minutes in the final match of the Lobo Classic on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex with the game ending in a tie, 0-0.
"I'm bummed," said head coach Jeremy Fisbein. "I'm not devastated, but bummed. It's disappointing to let something like that slip away. It was there for the taking."
The tie brings UNM's record to 3-1-2 on the season.
The first half of the game was relatively quiet with only six shots fired, four by Harvard and two by UNM.
The Lobos came alive in the second half, getting 11 shots off--six of those being shots on goal. UNM's defense was also tough, only allowing the Crimson to get off one shot.
Around 72:11 Lobos Ryan Farquharson and Devon Sandoval made a great play at the net with Farquharson heading the ball in, but no goal was awarded on the play due to a UNM foul on the Crimson's goalie, Austin Harms.
"That's a tough one," Fishbein said. "Any time there's a big collision and the keeper goes down, that's often how it is going to go."
The dominant play in the second half by the Lobos extended into the 20 minutes of overtime, but UNM couldn't find the back of the net.
Despite being frustrated with the draw, Fishbein said UNM did a lot of things right against the Crimson. He was very pleased with the Lobos' defense, composure and ability to create scoring opportunities.
"We're a team committed to playing nice soccer," he said. "I think it is fun to watch. You just have to take a couple of those chances you get."
UC Santa Barbara won the Lobo Classic, defeating Harvard 2-0 on Friday night, and blanking Buffalo 3-0 on Sunday morning.
Up next for the Lobos is their first road game of the season. UNM travels to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth on Sept. 25 in their last non-conference match up.
