Syracuse Rallies past New Mexico in Series Finale, 9-8

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Syracuse softball scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to down New Mexico, 9-8, Sunday at Lobo Field. The Orange rallied from an 8-4 deficit to take two of the three games this weekend. Senior Samantha Hughes blasted a two-run homer for the Lobos and went 1-for-3 in the game with two RBI. New Mexico fell to 1-2 on the year while Syracuse improved to 2-1.

Syracuse struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Hallie Gibbs led off the inning with a solo homer to right center. Amy Kelly and Lacey Kohl followed with back-to-back singles for the Orange. Lindsey Wasek came through to plate the other run on a run-scoring single to left.

The Lobos cut the lead in half after junior Erin Brandow scored in the bottom of the second inning. Brandow scored the only run on a ground ball to second by senior Samantha Hughes.

The Orange extended their lead in the fourth inning with two runs. Gaby Torzilli singled to right scoring two runs and giving Syracuse a 4-1 lead.

UNM's offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs. Freshman Shenise Cox doubled with the bases loaded picking up three RBI and tied the game. Junior Katie Gilmore kept the rally alive with a single that allowed Cox to score from second. Senior Analise Rubalcava plated Gilmore with a double to left center field and gave the Lobos a 6-4 lead.

The Lobos jumped ahead 8-4 after Hughes belted her shot into the right field bleachers in the fifth. Hughes pulled an inside pitch deep to right field and watched it carry over the wall. Brandow scored on the play after reaching on a single to start the inning.

Syracuse refused to go away and battled back with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. The rally was started by a solo home run by Stephanie Watts to left field. Watts hit her shot with two outs in the sixth. UNM walked two runs in during the seventh inning.

Lobo freshman Danielle Castro (1-1) took the loss in the circle after pitching 6 2/3 innings allowing eight runs on 16 hits. Rubalcava relieved Castro in the seventh and faced three batters before Castro was brought back to finish the game.

Sophomore Angie Sagnelli got the win for Syracuse and improved to 1-0 on the year. Sagnelli pitched one inning and faced five batters. Jenna Caira recorded the save after slamming the door on New Mexico in the final inning.
