Women's Golf Leads Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational After Day One

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 25 New Mexico women's golf team shot a 3-over 295 in the first round of the 25th Annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Golf Course Thursday afternoon (Sept. 25) to build a five-stroke lead in the 17-team tournament. No. 13 Oklahoma State is in second place with an eight-over 300 while Pepperdine is in third with a 14-over 306. Full results of the tournament are available at www.golfstat.com.

UNM junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.), rated the No. 7 women's collegiate player in the nation to watch by Golf World, fired a 3-under 70 with three birdies to top the individual leaderboard. Par for the championship course is 73 while the total yardage is 6,069 yards.

In addition to Downs, freshman Ashley Rollins (Austin, Texas) - fresh off a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Fall Preview - also cracked the top 10 with a 1-up 74. Rollins ended her round with two birdies at the par-3 17 and par-5 18.

Shannon Johnson (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), currently in a tie for 12th place, shot a 75 to finish 3-up for the first round. Rounding out the Lobo finishers were Katrina Leckovic (Sr., Burnaby, British Columbia), who carded a 76 and is in a tie for 20th place, and Christine Fernandez (So., Henderson, Nev.), who shot a 77 and is in a tie for 26th.

Three Lobos competed as individuals in the tournament: junior Christina Spence (74, tied for eighth); senior Kellyn Newman (80, tied for 50th); and sophomore Kelli Van Winkle (87, tied for 87th).

Round two of the three-round Dick McGuire Invitational continues tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 26) with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The New Mexico Lobos are scheduled to tee off at 10:10 a.m.
