WACO, Texas - New Mexico (2-2) softball opened the Getterman Classic Friday afternoon with a 10-1 run-rule victory over UT-San Antonio. Senior Samantha Hughes went 3-for-3 with a solo home run while senior Analise Rubalcava was 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded the win in the circle. New Mexico improved to 2-2 overall and will face Baylor this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. MT. The Roadrunners dropped to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
Hughes led off the game with a solo home run to center field. The homer was her second of the season and sparked a five-run first inning for the Lobos. Junior transfer Janet Rendon followed Hughes with a bunt single and the rally continued.
Freshman Shenise Cox walked and quickly advanced to second on a Katie Gilmore single to right. Gilmore's single loaded the bases for Rubalcava who lined a shot up the middle plating two runs and extending the Lobos lead to 3-0 in the top of the first.
UNM would go on to add two more runs in the first. Freshman Jessica Lujan-Dresslar had a run-scoring single in the inning that scored Gilmore and Rubalcava scored on a passed ball.
Rubalcava started in the circle for New Mexico and controlled the game from the first pitch. She faced 22 batters allowing only six hits and one run. Rubalcava improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory.
The Lobos scored a run in the fourth inning and extended their lead to 6-0. Freshman Jessica Garcia led off the inning with an infield single and took advantage of two Roadrunner miscues to score.
UTSA tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Roadrunners scored a run on back-to-back singles. Rubalcava was able to get consecutive ground outs to end the inning.
UNM put the game away in the top of the fifth inning. The Lobos added four more runs to make it 10-1. Hughes led off the inning with a single. Rendon followed with a shot through the left side of the infield and put runners at first and second with no outs.
Cox moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Gilmore singled allowing Hughes to score and advanced to second on the throw. Rubalcava doubled scoring Rendon and set the stage for Garcia. Garcia hit a two-run single up the middle and capped off the inning.
The four runs gave UNM a run-rule after Rubalcava got two pop outs and a ground out to end the game.
New Mexico had 12 hits in the game and had five players with multiple hits. Gilmore was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Rubalcava was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Hughes finished the game going 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
