Lobo Softball Splits Doubleheader at Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. --- New Mexico split a doubleheader Thursday at the 2008 Judi Garman Classic held at the Anderson Family Complex. The Lobos slipped past Illinois, 6-5, but fell to tournament host Cal State Fullerton, 4-3. UNM is 14-9 overall and will play the U.S. National Team Friday at 7 p.m. MT.

Sophomore Sara Loeffelholz belted two home runs in the victory over the Fighting Illini and collected three RBI. The Lobos had seven hits in the game and snapped a three game skid with the victory.

Illinois scored three runs in the bottom of the first and quick jumped ahead. The Fighting Illini opened the game with a triple by Danielle Zymkowitz and back-to-back walks to load the bases. Illinois followed with clutch run-scoring single and later scored two more runs on an error by the UNM pitcher.

Loeffelholz blasted a solo homer in the third inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

UNM added two more in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Samantha Hughes came through for the Lobos with a two-RBI double to left center. Hughes went 2-for-3 against Illinois with a run and two RBI.

The Fighting Illini jumped ahead 4-3 in the fourth inning. Audrey Gallien led off the inning with a double down the left field line and later scored on an RBI single by Zymkowitz.

New Mexico tied the game in the fifth after senior Lindsey Elcess scored off an illegal pitch. In the sixth, Loeffelholz hit a two-run home run to give the Lobos a 6-4 lead.

Gallien put the final run on the board for Illinois with a solo home run to center.

UNM's Kelly Ninemire got the win and improved to 9-5 overall. Ninemire threw seven innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Ashley Wright (4-4) took the loss for Illinois.

New Mexico 3, Cal State Fullerton 4

New Mexico rallied late with back-to-back home runs from Elcess and Gabriella Parra but could not overcome Cal State Fullerton Thursday. The Lobos fell to the Titans, 4-3. UNM had four hits in the game compared to seven by Cal State Fullerton.

New Mexico tied the game with a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Loeffelholz. Loeffelholz singled through the left side allowing Hughes to score.

The Titans jumped ahead 2-1 in the fourth on a solo home run by Lauren Lupinetti. Lupinetti belted three homers in the contest. CSFU hit a two-run home run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

UNM mounted a comeback in the sixth with the back-to-back long balls by Elcess and Parra. Cal State Fullerton managed to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Ninemire (9-6) pitched six innings for New Mexico and took the loss. Ninemire allowed four runs on seven hits. Jessica Doucette got the win for the Titans.
