ALBUQUERQUE -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team capped off its spring season with a decisive 3-0 victory over a squad of former Lobos and local greats on Wednesday evening in front of just over 100 fans in Johnson Gym.
"Tonight's match was a lot of fun and a good test," senior-to-be Lexi Ross said. "We knew our opponents and what they were going to -- we've played with some of them and play against some of them in practice and they knew us and what we would do, so we had to be smart and efficient.
"It was really competitive, but also a lot of fun."
The match was over in three sets - 25-17, 25-23, 27-25, but the teams went on to play a fourth set for good measure. The current Lobos took that game, too, 25-19.
Ross hit with .345 accuracy in the match, recording 13 kills in 29 swings.
Soon-to-be sophomore Skye Gullatt added 10 kills while 2012 All-America honorable mention honoree Chantale Riddle recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs. She added five total blocks.
Hannah Johnson handled all setting duties and tallied 48 assists. Her match-high for assists last season as a redshirt freshman was 40, recorded in the Lobos' 2-3 loss to CSU Bakersfield at home on Nov. 11.
Johnson said the Lobos knew what to expect for the alumni/local greats. Ashley Rhoades was going to be the go-to at the net. Allison Buck, two-time Mountain West Libero of the Year (2010 and 2011) was going to serve-receive well and dig the ball well. Jordan Russell was going to deliver wicked serves. And coach Lisa Beauchene was going to, well, be Lisa B., a sneaky left-handed setter playing scrappy defensive, distributing the ball to her hitters and every now and then, dumping the ball on the second touch and catching the Lobos out of system.
"We were prepared for those things and executed our game plan fairly well" Johnson said.
"It's a lot of pressure," she said, referring to moving into her role as the Lobos' primary setter. "Jordan Russell really helped me prepare to set an offense all by myself. I feel like our team is really getting into the swing of things this spring and we'll look really good next fall."
As predicted, Rhoades led the alumni at the net, tallying 12 kills on 22 swings and committing just one error (.500). Volunteer assistant coach Becky Walters added eight kills while former Lobo Allie Suiter chipped in with seven.
Beauchene had 33 set assis, 12 digs and six kills. Buck finished with eight digs, three ace serves and three kills.
The alumni match capped the 2013 spring season, but the Lobos would like to remind local volleyball enthusiasts that the Seventh Annual Grass Bash is this weekend, April 20-21 on Johnson Field.
