New Mexico Women's Basketball vs. BYU
The Pit - Albuquerque, N.M - 2/27/10
Lobo Coach Don Flanagan
On the BYU game:
"The key was that we played really good defense early on. I was surprised by the margin. They had a difficult time hitting their shots and I think we had something to do with that. We got our hands up on shooters and defended shooters pretty well. They like to go inside as you saw in the second half. They have some pretty strong kids inside so for the most part we did a pretty good job. I think we could have shot better and if we had shot better we would have had a bigger margin but nobody has beaten them like that this year. They just lost to San Diego State at San Diego State by two. Their average is somewhere around 65 or 68 points a game and we held them to 30. The defense was outstanding and basically it was how well we helped one another."
On motivation and the seniors:
"It appears like they were pretty motivated. It's hard for me to tell because we approach each game basically the same way but I think the underclassmen wanted to win it for the seniors and the seniors wanted to go out with a victory at the Pit."
Senior Amy Beggin
On Senior Day:
"It was a great feeling playing inside The Pit today. We have the best fans in the country and it was a special event. The fans make New Mexico basketball. We kept our focus against a tough BYU team and it's a good win to build momentum. We still have a lot of basketball ahead and need to stay focused."
Junior Jessica Kielpinski
On playing the Cougars:
"We played with a lot of desire today and worked really well together. We had great effort and wanted to win for the seniors. Defensively we made a lot of plays. BYU is a very strong team so it's nice to come away with the win."
