LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- New Mexico softball swept in-state rival New Mexico State Wednesday in a doubleheader at the NMSU Softball Complex. The Lobos beat the Aggies, 5-1, in game one and took game two, 10-3. UNM wins its third straight game and moves to 10-13 overall. NMSU falls to 21-15 after the doubleheader.
UNM opened game one with a run in the first inning on a RBI double by junior Lindsey Elcess. The Lobos carried the momentum into the fifth, where they added two more on a home run by senior Amy Ray. Ray's homer was her team-leading fourth of the year. UNM scored an unearned run in the sixth and Elcess scored the final run in the seventh on an RBI double by freshman Katie Gilmore.
Ray led the Lobos at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Elcess was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Junior catcher Ashley Allen was perfect at the plate going 2-for-2 in game one.
Junior Kelly Ninemire dominated the Aggies and pitched her fifth complete game of the year. Ninemire improved to 5-7, while recording a season-high nine strikeouts.
NMSU scored its only run of the game on a solo home run by sophomore Kristi Hanan in the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite the late run, UNM held on to win, 5-1.
The Lobos continued its offensive production in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning after the first four batters reached base. In the inning, Ray and Elcess both had RBI hits.
The Aggies tied the game in the second inning with three runs on three hits. UNM walked the first run home and gave up a two RBI single to Ashley Roszkos to knot the game at three.
UNM responded with three runs in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Allen had a two RBI triple to left center field to highlight the inning.
Freshman Tori Rogers started game two and settled in after the second inning. Rogers went the distance for the Lobos and moved her overall record to 5-3. In the game, Rogers had two strikeouts and only allowed three runs on 10 hits.
New Mexico added an insurance run in the sixth. Sophomore Samantha Hughes led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and proceeded to steal second and third. Elcess came through with a two out RBI single to right field to scored Hughes and put the Lobos up, 7-3.
NMSU had two hits in the home half of the sixth but a nice play by Lobo center fielder Hughes to throw out pinch runner Jenavieve Purcell at home plate killed the rally.
Rogers slammed the door in the seventh and secured the 10-3 victory for UNM.
New Mexico is idle this weekend and opens Mountain West Conference action on April 7 at Colorado State. For more information about Lobo athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
