COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico infielder/outfielder Ben Woodchick has earned Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played from April 16-22, 2012.  It is the first honor of his career.

Woodchick, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, hit .500 (10 of 20) for the week as the Lobos went 5-0, including two mid-week road wins at Texas Tech and a weekend series sweep over Florida Gulf Coast.  Against the Red Raiders, Woodchick went 3-for-7, with two runs scored, three RBI and two walks. During the weekend series sweep of FGCU, Woodchick collected seven hits in 13 at-bats with a run scored, four RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. For the week, Woodchick hit safely in all five games, including a current four-game streak of multiple hits, and recorded a .565 on-base-percentage. Woodchick also did not commit an error during the five games as he had five put-outs and one assist from the outfield.

"I've lined out a lot (this season), and coach is always giving me a hard time about it," Woodchick said. "But now they're starting to fall."

"It was a great job by Woodchick (this week)," Birmingham said. "He did a good job swinging the bat and doing things the right way."

Woodchick's stellar week has raised his average to a season-high .311 and he is enjoying his best season as a Lobo. He has already established new career-highs in triples (3), RBI (18) and stolen bases (8), and has a chance to set new marks in at bats, hits, runs, doubles, total bases, on-base percentage, walks, and assists before the season ends.

This is the 10th time this season a Lobo has won either the Mountain West Player or Pitcher of the Week award. This is a new UNM record, besting the mark of nine such awards during the 2000 season. Lobo hitters have been especially dominant, winning the award in seven of 10 weeks. A Lobo has won the award in each of the past three weeks and six out of the past seven.
