The University of New Mexico golf team sits in ninth place after two round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. The Lobos shot 592 (299-293) as a team , 16 shots over par. Fifth-ranked Georgia leads the tournament at 12-under with a two-round total of 564 (287-277). Sophomore Steve Saunders fired a 69 at the 6,962-yard, par-72 Forest Heights Country Club in the second round to finish the day at even par (75-69=144). He is currently tied for 11th in the individual race.
The 3-under card Saunders turned in for his second round was his personal low round of the season. It was also the fourth round under 70 of his career. He shot a 3-over 75 in the morning 18. Saunders could have had an even better score, but two bogeys in his last four holes dropped him to 3-under for the round.
Senior Charlie Beljan is tied for 27th in the individual race, 4-over for the tournament. He carded an eagle on the 547-yard, par-5 12th hole in his opening round to shoot 73. He had another solid round going in the afternoon, but double-bogeyed his last hole for a 75.
Junior Robb Bierbaum opened with a 1-over, 73 in the morning but came back with a 77 in the second round. Sophomore Nick Geyer started slow with an opening round of 78, but rebounded with a 73 in the afternoon. Sophomore Guillermo Chavez also played for the Lobos today, shooting 81 in the first round and 76 in the second.
New Mexico will conclude the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational tomorrow with the third and final round at the Forest Height country Club.
